Web Developer 1
Central University Libraries (CUL)

Title:  Web Developer 1

Reporting Relationships:  Reports to the Director of SMU Libraries
Systems and CUL Information Support Services;

Position Number:  08209

Responsibilities:  The Web Developer will be responsible for web
programming and technical support of advanced patron-centered web
content and services, including:  working with stakeholders to determine
the content and layout of the following websites:  CUL web sites
(http://www.smu.edu/cul), the shared SMU Libraries web site
(http://www.smu.edu/libraries), and a variety of digital web projects
(home page design, overall site navigation and usability, and site-wide
design standards).  Will establish templates and maintain programming
code for unified web layouts, page design, site searching, and site
navigation, and oversee quality control.  Will lead or assist with
usability testing efforts for these sites.  Will participate in CUL-wide
committee work. 

*       Works with designated Systems/CUL Information Support Services
staff members to provide web programming services to the OPAC Team,
Reference Services, Public Services, Digitization Advisory Group,
Friends of the SMU Libraries, SMU Libraries web stakeholders, and other
groups as appropriate.
*       Works with SMU central IT to provide tools and architecture that
support the needs of the Libraries content creators.
*       Works directly with SMU central IT and SMU Integrated Marketing
Group (Public Affairs) for troubleshooting, policy changes, server
changes, and consistency in following established guidelines for web
design.
*       Develops designs that enhance the library experience to the
user.
*       Works with faculty, staff, and students to understand changing
information seeking behaviors and incorporates these changes into the
libraries' web design.
*       Provides support to departmental web writers and content
providers through supervision of web-related work of library staff and
student assistants with web content production software skills, web
directory, and uploading experience.

        Qualifications:

        Required:  Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 3 years of
web-related work experience is required, preferably experience in web
development, web programming, design, and maintenance.  Candidates
selected for an on-campus interview must provide a portfolio containing
samples of their web work.  Understanding of or experience with
database-driven and other dynamic web technologies.  Working knowledge
of one or more of the following is essential:  Microsoft IIS, HTML 4.01,
XHTML, XML, ASP, ASP.Net, VBScript, ADO, FrontPage Extensions, database
systems, JavaScript, and web standards.  Experience with content
production software packages:  FrontPage, Acrobat, and Photoshop.
Ability to cooperatively set and effectively attain goals in a
fast-paced, constantly changing environment; and strong analytic,
problem solving, communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills.
Strong public service orientation.  Self-directed and collaborative work
experience.  Capability to excel in a team-oriented environment.  Must
possess strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills. 

        Preferred:  Familiarity with Voyager OPAC or similar integrated
library system and university and library portals.  Experience in an
academic library, particularly in public services or reference services.
Project management experience.  Work experience with Access and
Dreamweaver.

        Statement of General Expectations:

        In addition to core management and service responsibilities, all
CUL staff participate in work teams which cross service boundaries.  All
staff must be prepared to adapt to flexible organizational patterns and
changing environments.  Position duties and responsibilities will change
as the libraries respond to new priorities and user's research needs.
The Libraries will adopt new directions and information technology as
appropriate, update policies and procedures as necessary, and
periodically reevaluate collections, access, services, operations, and
programs.
