A conversation between myself and Sir Kenneth recently has got me thinking
about the state of percussion performance in Ansteorra, and I've realized
that, essentially, it consists primarily of either belly-dance drummers or
bodhran (Irish drum) players, neither of which are demonstrably period (at
least not in the form in which they usually show up at events). In order
not to be the cranky old Laurel who sits on the sidelines and whines but
never actually does anything about the perceived problem, then, I've
decided to offer to hold a class on the history and performance techniques
of period percussion instruments, from the Middles Ages through the
beginning of the Baroque, contingent on there being enough interest, of
course. I could give this class at Bjornsborg's Fall event, or prior to
that, if someone has a good suggestion as to place and time. This would be
a minimum two-hour class, with lots of hands-on interaction with my fairly
sizeable collection of instruments, plus those of anyone else who cares to
contribute. The historical text would be derived primarily from James
Blades' excellent monograph "Early Percussion Instruments"; performance
techniques from my own experiences and those of masters of the craft such
as Peter Maund of Ensemble Alcatraz. I taught a variation on this same
class at a Kingdom Dance Symposium ten or fifteen years ago.
This is not, I repeat, this is *not* a Middle-Eastern percussion
class. You will not leave here knowing how to pound out Beledi or Masmudi
if you didn't know them coming in. You will, however, know the difference
between a long drum and a side drum and the role nakers played in both
musical and military history.
For those who don't know me, I'm a classically-trained percussionist
(former International Jazz Festival winner and principal with a regional
symphony orchestra) and I've played with a variety of early music ensembles
over the years, including Musica Allegra, the University of Texas Early
Music Ensemble, Passing Measure, La Bella Musica, the Duc du Berry Ensemble
at George Mason University in Virginia, and Dulci Jubilo here in San
Antonio.
I haven't been on the Ansteorra list for some years, so if some kind soul
could forward this to them, I'd be most obliged. I realize that King's
College would have been the best venue for this class; I apologize for not
having thought of it in time.
