Ok, here's the scoop.
My elevation to the WS was announced a little over a month before the ceremony. The elevation occurred at Steppes Warlord in '96.
Because becoming a WS was a big event for me, I had always planned to hold vigil if it had ever happened. Not in the traditional sense because I knew it would cause ... problems since usually vigils are held for peerages. No, I had planned to find a spot and stay up all night in contemplation.
However, it had also been announced that Cedric the Fiddler was to be elevated to the Laurel that same event. The night before (Friday night), there was a planned vigil. Cedric knew my feelings on the subject and graciously asked that I sit with him. It was an honor to share the occasion with my long time friend.
So, in short, I sort of did and sort of didn't stand vigil the night before I was made a member of the WSA. I did have a vigil years later the night before I was elevated to the Order of the Pelican. And again, Cedric played a part as he was the Lion that spoke for me.
With regards to the general thread, vigils are unusual in this kingdom with repect to WS elevations. As far as announcing elevations vs on-the-spot elevations, in the past several years it's been probably about 50-50. A lot of it depends on the timing, what is known about the receipient's wishes, and the grace and wisdom of the Crown.
