Speaking of heralds and armor, According to Alan Young's book "Tudor
and Jacobean Tournaments", it was a custom during tournaments that if
a knight dropped anything, the heralds got to claim it and then
ransom it back to the knight.
"...at the tournament on 13 November 1565 to celebrate the wedding of
Ambrose Dudley, the Earl of Warwick, the heralds at one point seized
both the horse and armor of Henry Mackwilliam after he and his horse
had been thrown in the tourney by Henry Knollys. There was some
dispute about this and the Earl Marshal, Thomas, Duke of Norfolk
called upon the Kings of Arms to show precedents. This was done and
the heralds were awarded twenty pounds for the redemption of the
horse and armor..."
