Armor is generally designed to have some padding underneath it, usually in
the form of an arming coat or such. It would depend on how thick this
material is compared to 'traditional' padding. For arming coats I usually
sew several layers of cotton batting into the elbow areas. Far less bulky
than modern sports pads and you don't have to worry about losing them.

Kushitani Leathers has had something like this for quite some time.
Unfortunately articulated armor can not function correctly with modern sport
pads under it.
