One thing I've always admired about the SCA is that it taught to look at
history in a different way. Yes, I agree that by the strictest of
definitions BBQ is not period, however, this does not mean that meat
cooked on a spit and or open flame is not loosely related to what we now
do as BBQ. Therefore one can make an arguement that even though it was not
called BBQ or Barbacoa or even in fact involved anything remotely
resembling a smoker/grill the spirit of cooking a large amount of food in
order to impress another with your wealth could be translated to cooking
large amounts of in order to impress others with your generosity and
ability to cook. Either way in a very loose upside down 45 degree angler
way the spirit modernly represented by a BBQ is period, even though the
actual act is not.

Confused yet?

ps besides it's cold out and a fun conversation.
