day-tripping a lot more today than we did when I started in the SCA and I
believe that has contributed to there being lass bardic at our events.
I also would prefer that we not have a court at the event. It would
just use time that could better be spent on bardic.

I agree, no fighting, yes camping. however, I see no good reason not to have a court. The thing to do would be to make the court fit the event. When Sir Pendaran received his Laural the entire ceremony was done in Iambic Pentameter. Imagine a whole court done in iambic pentameter, or Norse alliterative verse, or Gregorian chant. Imagine a court led by performers, who know how to project and hold an audience, so the entire assemblage can see, hear, and enjoy what is going on , rather than just hearing the citation read by the herald. Maybe even have special award scrolls written verse.
For that matter, if it *WAS* decided to have fighting, there could be a "warrior poets" tournament, where the combatants had to sing or recite poetry or tell a story while fighting. Call it a "Cyrano de Bergerac" tourney. Think of the entertainment value that could have...
