When I worked for MCI in Pentagon City, a short walk took me to the Pentagon which had at that time (I assume it is still there) a shopping center underneath. It had a drug store, florist, a USGS store where you could get that map for that hike, but most importantly to me as a student of history, a bookstore.
It's where i got my first John Keegan book, the latest Sharpe book from Bernard Cornwell, where I discovered Stephen Coonts. What it didn't have was a large selection of SciFi books which may explain why Sir Jean Paul was a bit lonely.
What they did have in 1984 other than military related publications was a large collection of guide books to Nudist Resorts. I swear.
I would have liked to have asked Pournelle about H.Beam Piper though...
