Well, actually, the corporation wasn't founded in Berkeley, or by hippies. 
A tourney was  founded in Berkeley by hippies in 1966, and the group doing 
it was named the Society for Creative Anachronism by Marion Zimmer Bradley 
soon thereafter.  This group didn't require membership paperwork .

The corporation was founded in Sacramento in 1968 by SF fans, without the 
knowledge of most current members of the Society.
