It's a good question.
A lot of people feel there's a natural evolution or journey starting with principality and ending with kingdom.
The option is there, of course, but as the original poster stated, there are a number of positives just being a principality.
We have non-ambitious (with regards to kingdom status) principalities in the SCA now, so I think people are starting to at least get comfortable with the concept.
Historically speaking, the existance of a principality, county, barony, etc. did not automatically mean that the people would become a kingdom or nation unto their own. Just as becoming a state in the US isn't the first step to becoming your own country. :)
