I find wooden mugs to be the best, as ceramic tends to break oh-so-easily, usually being the victim of gallavanting about during revelry. Metal mugs get quite disturbingly cold or hot, depending on the liquid inside.
I've also found a fetching basket does wonders when carrying non-period cans and bottles and such.
