I've seen some correct things and some dubious things in this thread.
Just to toss in my $.02, here's a summary of what I found when I was
looking into kilting:

Also (in response to others) I was under the impression that bonnets
didn't come into use until the mid 1600s.  I would love to be
dissuaded of this, as it would give me a hat to wear at events.
