[Ansteorra] Student chapter?

Hey Giertrud, et all,
Others have provided a lot of good ideas on getting started with an SCA-on-campus organization, so I won't try to repeat those. I have also been involved in setting up and maintaining a campus SCA group at UofHouston, so I can offer suggestions if/when the time comes, as well.
However, as with all college life experiences, it's easy to get caught up in the extra-curricular activities (and the SCA is one of those) and not remember what you are there to do - study! take classes! learn skills that will hopefully earn you a living after you get out of school! School is the priority!
My suggestion for your first year at school is to focus on school, and then the occasional SCA activity as you find time for it, knowing you won't be able to attend everything. As I understand that Giertrud does not drive, she will be dependent on other SCA friends in the Seguin area to provide her transportation to any local area meetings or events. It may take you a while to find out who and where those SCA folks are that can provide transportation - as with any college student without wheels.
If there is not already a group of SCA students at this college, then once you get more settled in to your studies, probably by your second semester or year, then you may find time to pursue setting up an SCA campus group with other students. If a campus group never gets going, you can still play with the SCA in the local area.
Good luck in school, and we'll see you around the SCA events when we see you.
Cheers, Hillary

I would second this suggestion. Look into forming a Canton and a
separate student medieval history group that meets the requirements.
That's essentially how Shadowlands functions with respect to the
university. So, while the majority of our population is transient
students we have a core of non-student long resident members to
maintain continuity.

In addition to SCA people, you will want to talk to the Student Activities Director to find out what the requirements are for groups in the college.

I plan on attending Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX. The meetings
of the local shire are,
unfortunately, rather far away.
I was doing some reading and noted some "student chapters" are
around.
Several of the students there DO attend the Renaissance Fair and I am sure
there would be
some interest in the group.
Does anyone know about who I would contact or such about starting such a
group when
I arrive?

You should also talk to folks from Mooneschadowe. They have a very
active student group that was just recently formally recognized by OSU,
which means they can now receive funds from the University. In fact,
the members of their student group are receiving the registration fee
and gas money to go to the annual week long "conference" in Mississippi
this March. :-)

I need to correct an error I made in my post regarding Stargate's spring
event in April. I stated that we'd be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of
Rapier in the SCA, someone kindly brought to my attention that its actually
the 30th Anniversary of the White Scarf -- Don Tivar being the first Don,
March 1979 (rapier being at the first SCA event).

Just wanted to explain some of the rules for sword making, and why changes had been made.
?
6-9 year olds originally could only use golf tube with half inch of padding.? We changed the rule to allow 1/2 inch pvc or Rattan so the swords would last longer.?
Also, all pvc swords were to be capped.? We changed this because if you made your sword with the minimum half inch of padding the cap could be felt as a hard "knot" on the end of the sword and would leave bruises on the kids with out much effort.? For this reason we do not require the ends to be capped.? This is primarily for non thrusting weapons.? If you build a sword with a thrusting tip then I would go ahead and cap the end since the tip would need to be built up to 2 and 1/2 inches anyway.?
?
?NOTE the 6-9 year olds cannot use thrusting weapons.
?
Thanks,
?Caedmon
