Well spoken, Brendan. As someone with no talent for that type of artwork, yes, don't bite the hand that might feed you.

Have to chime here for those who know me. I have been fortunate enough to
eceive both charters and original scrolls. I was one who petitioned the
ueen's to create a Queen's Champion charter. Why? Because I love the artwork
hat goes into my scrolls. Every piece I receive is a treasure to me, both for
hat it represents I have accomplished and for the hard work put forth by the
riginal calligrapher and the illuminator who painted it. Just because the
alligraphy and artwork are not THE original does not make it any less
mportant. Until I am personally willing to take up a pen and brush, I will not
ut off the hand that feeds me.

ady Eleanor,
While I appreciate your opinion, I think that you may have a somewhat distorted
iew of the current state of the Ansteorran College of Scribes.
Having lived in a Kingdom/Principality that only distributed original scrolls
East/Drachenwald), and having served as Albion Signet and principal scribe
here for almost four years, I can attest to the fact that Ansteorra is indeed
apable of creating original scrolls for each and every award recipient within
he Kingdom. However, in order to create the amount of scrolls that were
ecessary, the scribes were often sequestered at events to complete the pieces
hat the Crown wanted for court that evening. With the change in our system that
ou are suggesting, I can guarantee that this would happen, and I would
ersonally prefer that people who spend their time and money to attend events
re afforded the opportunity to do what they wish at the event, rather than the
cenario that I outlined above.
That being said, I do not believe that a change from our current charter/
ommissioned originals system is necessary. Despite the unfortunate experience
hat you stated regarding the "disposability" of the charters and the perceived
ack of quality on painting that you witnessed, the regional and kingdom scribal
fficers are very diligent about educating the charter painters and helping to
ransition those who might wish to transition into creating original works for
he Kingdom. They are also responsible for ensuring that the scrolls are of a
uality acceptable to the Crown. The rule of thumb for the painters is "don't
urn in something that you don't want hanging on the wall in your front room
forever* ".
As to your assessment of the state of the Ansteorran College of Scribes, I would
rgue that we are not using excuses to explain or defend anything, as the
urrent charter system works well for us.
Finally, I would echo Master Cynric's suggestion - perhaps you should step
orward and present what you feel would be a viable solution to what you
erceive to be a problem. May I suggest volunteering to create an original
croll blank for a start?
Yours in service,
