The 19th Annual Meeting of the Texas Medieval Association (TEMA) will be held at the University of Texas in Austin on the weekend of October 23-24, 2009.   This conference is not an SCA event, but is an academic conference with hourly sessions where presentation lectures are presented by academics and independent researchers.   I've attended this conference when it was last held in Houston at UH a few years back; some of the lectures are fun and fabulous, while also academic in nature; some are very dry and well.. academic.  But, it was an interesting learning opportunity and sometimes the book merchants have great finds (tho can be pricey).

Tends to be held in October each year.  Subjects vary, sometimes there are art history or archeology related topics, but generally more of a history/literature focus.

Since this weekend conference is the same weekend at the Bryn Gwlad event, thought some of you might be interested in the Friday conference classes for the day price.  Details can be found at:

Should you decide to attend - Please remember that some academics do not look well upon the SCA reenactors, so best to refer to yourself as an independent scholar or researcher.  Also, this is usually a dress-work-casual function, which generally means nicer casual, not jeans and t-shirts.

Regards, Hillary
