LEIF ERIKSON DAY, 2009
- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
On this day in 1825, the ship Restauration landed in New York City after sailing for 3 months from Stavanger, Norway. The 52 passengers aboard represented the first organized emigration of Norwegians to America. These brave individuals set to the seas, following in the grand footsteps of the famous Scandinavian explorer Leif Erikson. Over a millennium ago, Leif Erikson -- son of Iceland and grandson of Norway -- arrived in North America and founded the settlement Vinland, located in modern-day Canada. Today, we celebrate his historic voyage and remember those who journeyed to America from far-away lands.

Our Nation's founding history is marked by millions of individuals who faced great hardship and difficulty as they pursued a brighter future abroad. As explorers, they did not know what they would find, but they were determined not to turn back, in order to learn what lay beyond the setting sun. This same spirit lived within Leif Erikson, and it has inspired countless others who venture from their homes in search of opportunity, uncertain of the possibilities and challenges that await them.

Today, our Nation continues to welcome those descendents of Leif Erikson to our shores. Nordic Americans have contributed immeasurably to the success of America. Their cultural accomplishments have enriched the diversity of our country. And their pioneering spirit continues to embody our Nation's unbounded enthusiasm for discovery and learning.

To honor Leif Erikson and celebrate our Nordic-American heritage, the Congress, by joint resolution (Public Law 88-566) approved on September 2, 1964, has authorized the President to proclaim October 9 of each year as "Leif Erikson Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2009, as Leif Erikson Day, and I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs to honor our country's rich Nordic-American heritage.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventh day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.
BARACK OBAMA

I know the story. I'd guess we all know the story.

What I don't know is how it's done in the SCA (apparently it has been done
before from the post) and how Gwyneth wants it to work for her feast.

Colin

To my recollection, Stone Soup was mostly used for dinner Saturday
night in the SCA camp at the Renaissance Festival down near Houston.
Folks would bring carrots, or potatoes, or meat, or noodles or
whatever and add it to the pot (or they'd contribute a dollar or two
to Mistress Janet, the cook.)

I'd guess if it was used in other places, the cook might actually
plan the soup, and buy (or request) the various components
beforehand. that'd give a more consistent, but less adverturous soup.

Stone soup was done in the early days of the SCA to supplement the "feast" (I use that word lightly).
The only money involved is what you pay for feast.
I'm not requesting anything.? I posted earlier this month that I will prove broth and just throw everything appropriate into the pot.? As cook I DO reserve the right to do something different with stuff that just won't work (let's just say anchovies).? You don't HAVE to participate...we just thought it would be fun (and besides, Don Robin made me promise to do it<G>)
Bring your contributions by the kitchen before noon.
gwyneth

I have some leftover prime rib beef bones that have have been waiting in the
freezer to go into a stock pot. I'll dig them out along with whatever else I
can find.

This might help:
http://www.extremelinux.info/stonesoup/stonesoup.html
Once upon a time, somewhere in post-war Eastern Europe, there was a great
famine in which people jealously hoarded whatever food they could find,
hiding it even from their friends and neighbors. One day a wandering soldier
came into a village and began asking questions as if he planned to stay for
the night.

"There's not a bite to eat in the whole province," he was told. "Better keep
moving on."

"Oh, I have everything I need," he said. "In fact, I was thinking of making
some stone soup to share with all of you." He pulled an iron cauldron from
his wagon, filled it with water, and built a fire under it. Then, with great
ceremony, he drew an ordinary-looking stone from a velvet bag and dropped it
into the water.

By now, hearing the rumor of food, most of the villagers had come to the
square or watched from their windows. As the soldier sniffed the "broth" and
licked his lips in anticipation, hunger began to overcome their skepticism.

"Ahh," the soldier said to himself rather loudly, "I do like a tasty stone
soup. Of course, stone soup with *cabbage* -- that's hard to beat."

Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a cabbage he'd retrieved from
its hiding place, and added it to the pot. "Capital!" cried the soldier.
"You know, I once had stone soup with cabbage and a bit of salt beef as
well, and it was fit for a king."

The village butcher managed to find some salt beef . . . and so it went,
through potatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms, and so on, until there was
indeed a delicious meal for all. The villagers offered the soldier a great
deal of money for the magic stone, but he refused to sell and traveled on
the next day.

The moral is that by working together, with everyone contributing what they
can, a greater good is achieved.

Pardon my ignorance, but I wasn't her 30 years ago and have never seen or
heard of a Stone Soup being done for an event, so I have some questions...

What are appropriate items to bring?
How much of the item should I bring?
When do you need it?? Is it something I can just bring onsite or do you
need
it in advance?
Are there some items you intend to provide so we know not to bring them?

Thanks,

We're going to get about 45 minutes to do the class Demo that night.
We're going to get the beginning of class. I've heard from a few
people and will be touching base with them some more shortly. I'd love
to get some others involved as well if possible. If you're willing/
able/interested in coming out on that Thursday night to help us with
the class demo. I'm thinking C&I stuff, costumes, the pewter casting,
maybe something food wise if it's easy enough to make. I'll help in
the making of it!

Note: If you are interested in this topic, please read the entire post.

There have been some rumors that the Arts and Sciences Display at Bryn Gwlad 30th Year was being canceled. These rumors are entirely true (don't stop reading). Due to my impression that this aspect of the event was creating neutral to negative responses I removed the display from the event (really, don't stop reading). I had the website altered to remove the reference to the display. Within 24 hours several of you contacted me to let me know that the display was not on the website and to inquire if it was still happening. Some of you made it clear that you intended to display your creations and finds. When beaten about the head and shoulders sufficiently, even I can see the obvious. I have therefore uncanceled the A&S display (you can stop reading now if you really want to, but you might not want to).

There are two opportunities to show your A&S talents and Bryn Gwlad 30th Year Flashback. First, on Friday night, at about 0-dark:30, there will be a fashion show in the Curtain theatre. Here you will be able to wear, carry, brandish or otherwise show off your period appropriate (Ansteorra, 1979) creations as well as artifacts that you may have found buried in the closet or garage. Saturday, during the day, there will be static display tables next to the museum where you may present your items to the populace. Thier Excellencies and other members of the populace have promised that there will be largesse for those items that most impress them, and there are many ways of impressing them. We encourage all who appreciate the Arts and Sciences to demonstrate their respect for our artisans with thier own largesse should they see presentations that strike them (Note: entries that actually physically strike viewers will be removed from display. One can't be
too careful with you people).

I apologize for any concern that my erroneous judgement may have caused, and I sincerely hope that our artisans will forgive any slight they may have felt because of it.

Stone soup was very common at the small Steppes events run by house Evergreen, and seen a few times Sunday at Warlord.

I'd guess if it was used in other places, the cook might actually

Not that I know of. The ones I contributed to were purely random, except that some people would forget to bring something, and find out what was already in it before running out to the store.
