Ivo, were we squabling? I'm sorry, I saw it more as discussing :)  Besides, it is probably useful information to the first questioner; if they did not know the term for a student to a Don/dona then they also would not be sure of the proper address.
 
Pieter, yes people use it, yes it is incorrect; as for telling anyone not to....that is not where I was going.  If I can clear up a missunderstanding of the proper defenition and use of a word, especially in our specialized use, I will share the knowledge.  You may do with it what you will.  I will cringe when you use Cadet Joe-Bob...but I will not slap you for it.
