Having tossed a few cloven fruit into the bushes in my day, I can
explain why *I* came to dislike the game.
As has already been noted, cloven fruit were sometimes used as a way
to demand a kiss of someone, regardless of the other person's desires
in the matter. And while one cloven fruit making the rounds at a
200-person event isn't all that bad, someone bringing in a basket
with fifteen or twenty of the things at the beginning of a feast is
another matter altogether. When that started happening, any time I
received a cloven fruit, I'd simply dispose of it, rather than pass it on.
