Salut cozyns,

 

C'ez vrer, vostr'excellence. Bluing protects steel from corrosion, but that protection is no more complete than paint. Blued steel is beautiful but requires some upkeep.

 

If you want black crowns, I would recommend enameled copper or brass. The internals will still require some upeep, but the outer black surface will always remain as smooth as glass.

I'm told that hot bluing only offers protection on steel, and even that depends on the quality of the steel and the chemistry involved in the process. Maybe period bluing methods (like burning oil off of a piece in a very hot fire - similar to the WD-40/propane torch method mentioned in the Florilegium) work better for corrosion resistance.
