Stefan,
Ink stones are what the Chinese used instead of inkwells, sort of. Ink was
usually compacted into sticks. When you needed ink, the stick was then
ground on the ink stone and mixed with a bit of water, then the brush was
dipped into that to write with.
I have a couple of decent but not really expensive ink stones and ink
sticks. They are one of the four treasures of the scholar, if my memory
serves correctly. Hope this helps.
