If you are just going to make needles, and are going to put it in a stump,  ebay for
"stump anvil" or "scythe anvil" I've picked up a couple for around $40.

They were carried to the fields and hammered into a stump to touch up blades.

If you have a Vice already, just get a engineers hammer or a sledge, and have someone
Polish the face up for you.

Put the polished face up in the vice, clamp it, and you've got a decent anvil for needle sized forging.


Try to leave the edges of the anvil crisp, because one of the techniques for forging very fine points is to do it on the very corner of the anvil.
