[Ansteorra] Fee Increase and other Business...

Interesting use of the word "fighters"...last I checked, rapier
participants were fighters also.

Of course, Chivalric fighters *don't* carry the biggest sticks....those
of use who use wooden lances on horseback do. ;-)

I don't really think we should tax fighters, at the very least because
it's not very smart to antagonize one of the largest portions of your
members, and the ones who carry the biggest sticks. But my point is that
the field is already open with the NMS.

Basically, they want more money, and they don't want to raise membership
fees for it, so where should they get it? From non-members is the
current answer, and it's a problematic one. Maybe instead of trying to
fix the problems with that answer, we can find a better answer. I mean,
look at all of these people willing to brainstorm and fundraise to avoid
charging people the NMS. Can't we just do away with the NMS and keep the
brainstorming and fundraising, if we really feel like SCA, Inc. should
have these funds?

Anyway...

greetings

lol, probably better run and hide, there's a lot of guys with sticks ; )
but just to play devils advocate, if you instituted a $1.00 per entry
per tournament for fighters, then by rights , shouldn't you also add
$1.00 per entry for a& s, $1.00. per entry for rapier, $1.00 for missile
activities ,and $3.00 non activity fee for those not participating in
any official activity ? and possibly even $ 10.00 per entry to crown
tourney lists ?? but wait , wouldn't that also open the field to paying
an extra $5.00 per year in order to be eligible to receive any awards
that year ? with .33 cents of every dollar going to corporate,.33 cents
going to kingdom, and .33 cents going to the local group ?? wow, sounds
like a buffet, for rich people ; )

Agreed.

I wonder, though, why we have the surcharge WHERE we have it.

Corporate REALLY wants us to have newcomers.

Corporate REALLY wants/needs more money.

It seems like the NMS fee for non-members is a battle between the two.
We either discourage new people from coming and maybe get some funds, or
not get some funds and get more new people. I know that $3-$5 doesn't
sound like much, but when you're a parent or a college student, it's a
lot of money. After all, $3 is almost 20 packages of Ramen!

Is there not a different place altogether where we can put a surcharge?
Maybe $1 per entry, per tournament, for fighters? *ducks and runs*

Why is there such an effort to pretend that a surcharge imposed by the
corporation is not a surcharge imposed by the corporation?

It isn't a temporary membership, and doesn't function like one. It isn't
a members discount, and doesn't function like one. It isn't a variable
site fee, and doesn't function like one.

Yes, we'd like the SCA to be more welcoming of newcomers. And yes, of
course the SCA would be more welcoming if we didn't charge more for
invitees, but we do, and political spin cannot make that look like
anything else.

It's a surcharge. It really is. Let's commit ourselves to telling the
truth.
