Now, Robin, that's a bit of bardic exaggeration. My pouch contains 
many things **smaller than 8 inches** that are useful at an SCA 
event: first aid kit, tools, coil of coat hanger wire for opening 
locked cars, spare goblet, salt, corkscrew/bottle opener, etc...
