The story I *heard* was that it was taken from a chronicle's report of
Halley's Comet. "The eleven observations of comets between 687 AD and
1114 AD recorded in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle"

not have those two words in that spelling in the 1066 entry (though
forms of "steorr" occur in many entries).
