Great qualifications? It sounds to me like you have more experience than I
do! You don't sound like an amateur to me, Richard. You sound like you know
what you're talking about.
I never finished my master's degree at UT. I got a master's in English at
SHSU, and I focused more on Early and Middle English literature than
anything. The German department at UT didn't seem all that keen on me
pursuing a concentration in medieval German literature (which would have
been heaven for me); everywhere I turned, someone was trying too
aggressively to steer me in the direction of applied linguistics or literary
theory. Eventually I got sick of it and jumped ship. It took a few years for
me to get the courage to go back to school, but when I did, I was more ready
to stand up for what I really wanted to do.
And jobs teaching English are easier to come by than jobs teaching German,
anyway LOL
