[Ansteorra] Why aren't we doing this?

Along those lines, and I totally agree with Cathal on this, very rarely are
there any classes at tournies or other events that cover this topic.  Most
fighters unless they are historically minded, begin their SCA fighting career's
with a period kit but rather build into it over time and learn lessons along the
way. There are many options for fighters to build period looking kits that do
not include purchasing a suit of full plate or wearing a full mail hauberg on
the field. I have fought in the sca for over 20 years and my kit has gone
through many changes and only a few years ago did it reach its final stage of
periodness.I have taught such a class before and I would love to give a class
for fighters on building period kits on a budget and how to achieve a period
look and still maintain that competitve edge neccesary for tournies and war.

I hesitate to do ANYTHING to discourage fighters from the field. I like
having new people out there and learning how to play the game. The best way
for people to get this look and have our game be better is to lead by
example. Show the new fighters and the known world that you can have a
period kit and still compete at the highest levels. Keep in mind too that
nobody starts out with a fully period kit, I have yet to see a newbie decked
out like Sir Gaston (14th century period kit). They ususally work their way
from in-expensive plastic covered with a tunic to something that looks more
period. And its usually a piece at a time (vambraces, chest protection,
legs, shoes).  Getting a new fighter on the field and in his/her own kit is
really when you have them hooked and they will continue to play. If you
really want to get people to look more authentic I suggest groups or people
give out authentic items to tourney winners and as largess. If you want the
fighters to look more authentic take some action. :)
