>From what I've read (no citations at hand) it was pretty much all across the
board depending upon what "impurities" (i.e. other elements) where in the
local ores. There are pieces from the time periods that the museums have
cut and cross sectioned to look at the crystal structures that show
hardening and tempering was done to the armor pieces. The interesting part
on that is that some of the pieces that show heat treating marks where
pretty much mild steel, with not nearly enough carbon to substantially
harden.
That's what I remember from what I've read.
