Greetings!

One of the things I like about Heraldry (in general, and in the SCA)
is that there are so many different ways to get involved. Really, the
first question should be, Do you have any clue of where your interests
lie? Heralds in the SCA can generally be broken down into Voice
heralds, and "Book" heralds, Protocol heralds, or Precedence heralds.
Voice Heraldry is usually comprised of list/field heraldry, court
heraldry, and site announcements (cry heraldry). Book heraldry is
typically broken down into Onomastics (research of names and naming
practices) and Armory (research and design of the actual heraldic
devices). Protocol and Precedence typically deal with our awards
system, and other nuances.

So that's a very broad overview of Heraldry in the SCA. The SCA
College of Arms website has quite a few articles on the differing
areas of Heraldry, which you can read to explore more,
http://heraldry.sca.org . I also feel that "on the job" training is a
really great way to learn more. Check with your local pursuivant to
see if they need a hand with things. If your group doesn't have a
local pursuivant (shameless plug here!), consider taking the
warranting class and performing that office! Your regional herald
should also be able to connect you up with a more experienced herald
who doesn't mind sharing their knowledge.

Some websites I find useful (We're currently working on revamping our
own website, and so I will present links to other resources as well):

http://heraldry.sca.org - the College of Arms website
http://herald.ansteorra.org - The Ansteorran College of Heralds website
http://www.modaruniversity.org/Heraldry.htm - Modar's Heraldry Page -
lots of great articles, but some dead links here and there
http://www.midrealm.org/heraldry/education/index.htm - Midrealm CoH
Educational Articles
http://lists.ansteorra.org/listinfo.cgi/heralds-ansteorra.org - The
Ansteorran Herald's mailing list

The above list is by no means exhaustive. There are tons of resources
out there on the internet, as well as in our own Kingdom. Please don't
hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Yours in Service,
