The is no way you can do without the authorization. We have taken this
to the Society level on a couple of occasions.
When you are shooting at another live person it becomes "combat" and
from the Marshals Handbook.
*II.B.2.* /No person shall participate in Official Combat-Related
Activities (including armored combat, period fencing, and combat
archery) outside of formal training sessions unless they have been
properly authorized under Society and Kingdom procedures. /
So if it is a "tournament" or a "competition" it is almost impossible
to call it a "formal training session".
I agree with you that I would NOT want it to be part of a Baronies
"Archery" Championship Tournament because it means that so many people
that traditionally participate in target archery would have to be
excluded. However, it does not have to be part of "archery"
championship and can be a stand alone competition. I am also mindful
that Armored Combat, Rapier Combat, Equestrian Activities, etc. all
required authorizations before participation so requiring an
authorization for certain activities should not be a foreign concept to
our members. Perhaps if this catches on there will one day be
groups that will formally recognize both a Target Archery Champion and a
Combat Archery Champion.
Also, as a point of clarification we got permission at the Society level
to have both Armored Combat and Rapier Combat Archers participate
together in these tournaments as long as the weapons are legal on both
the armored and rapier fields. So you can have a Armored participant
in one box and 30 foot away in another box have a Rapier participant.
There is no risk of them making physical contact and as long as the
bow/ammo is legal for both fields then it is perfectly OK to mix them.
This opens the tournament up to a few more participants.

-EA
