Thanks that was the best idea I have heard so far.

Which brings up a whole other can of worms in that if we are going to toss gender roles on their heads for modern sensibility, then why shouldn't half of our Crowns be done so by election instead of combat, essentialy a Peace Crown, for the non-campaign winter months, and  War Crown, for the summer or traditional campaign months.   In July, you would have the election instead of the fight, then in January a fighting tourney as usually with the winner being designated "Princeps et Dux Bellorum" ("Prince and Duke of War") and would essentially be the Sword for the Peace Crown until he/she took the throne themselves.  The Peace Crown would as prince and princess (or whatever combinstion comes about) would be just "Prince"  or to juxtapose, "Dux Pacis."  So in this manner perhaps people who are not great fighters (or even incapable physically to fight- let us not forget the handicapped and elderly in this if we are considering all demographics), but
are wise, just, and still leaders and servants of the kingdom can do as such at the highest level.

I know in Anglo-Saxon England, no one become Crown without the consent of the Witan, even the Bastard eventually sought their signature.  We might as well consider that if we are going to alter things as we go.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but our current model is really not historically documentable, either. The number of historical monarchs who have won their thrones by single combat and then appointed a woman to rule as a co-equal is quite small.
