Venus will pass in front of the sun in the second half of an eight
year pairing on June 5-6 2012. The next time this happen will be in
2117, in December.

     "During the 6,000-year period from 2000 BC to AD 4000, a total of
81 transits of Venus occur"

Since we have had telescopes, the pairs have occurred four times, this
one being the second half of the fourth pair, or the eighth time since
1631.
