[Ansteorra] Royal Huntsman - Special Tourney Rules***

Here is an outsider's point of view. I have no history as an Ansteorran
Royal Huntsman, so some of the tradition of the tournament may be lost on
me. /end discaimer

Also, several hours have passed since I started this email (at work) so it
may be a little disjointed...

I took a quick scan through the Laws and could not find a specific
reference to the Royal Huntsman tournament. I cannot find anything that
states that it is specifically a target archery tournament. This tells me
that it is subject to the will of the Crown and tradition.

I do know that in years past, there has sometimes been a "combat" component
to the tournament; combat equipment shot at targets.

Here in An Tir, we have the Kingdom Protector. This is a yearly tournament
to choose the archery champion of An Tir. The first 18 years of this
tournament a combat only format was used; likely similar to the "archers
duel" that is planned for the upcoming RH. I do know that many target-only
archers felt left out at a Kingdom Level. Our three Principalities have a
"target only" competition for choosing their Champions. Combat-only archers
felt left out there. Two years ago, TRM An Tir decided they would change
the KP format to be target archery. There were a number of combat archers
who felt very put out that the crown "threw away" 18 years of tradition
with very little consultation with the archery community (not that it was
required, but consideration from above goes a long way).

The archer who won that is primarily a combat archer. Looking through my
records, I can only find a longbow average of 65 for him). He bested the
"best" of the target archers, including 5 grandmasters and one Ludicrous
bowman.

When I was archery marshal for the Principality of Tir Righ, I had an idea
that might bring together the two camps. The Championship I ran had target
archers shoot their rounds, the combat archers did their combat tournament.
The top two of each came together into a final round; it was a moving
target shoot that was compatible for both sets of equipment. A target
archer beat a combat archer by only two points. 3rd and 4th place finishers
were also separated by less than 5 points. Very closely matched indeed.

I looked through the list of past RH's, and of the 21 (?) I know that 10 of
them do combat archery. A number of the names are unfamiliar to me still,
but I do hope to make their acquaintance one day.

Oh, and just because someone is a "target archer" or "combat archer"
doesn't mean that is all they do. I have been defined here at home as a CA
(only) yet my highest royal round average is 102, while I was serving my
second term as Kingdom Protector. Give people a chance, and they may
surprise you.

Her Royal Highness has spoken, and I think it is very clear that this is
not a permanent change. Change is not always a bad thing. :)

I only wish I were able to make it to this RH tourney to pit my skills,
both target and combat, against the best that Ansteorra has. (I also need
to work out a "dual citizenship" arrangement. I know my knight, King Ieuan
would be okay with it ;) )

I hope to see all my friends, CA, TA, and "other" at Gulf Wars!
