I am reminded of the argument that prohibitions on same-sex marriage
is not in the slightest bit discriminatory, because it doesn't bar any
homosexual from getting married.

That argument also reminds me of arguing that any Soviet was free to
apply to the Communist Party if they wanted, or not to apply.

Or (in England after legalization of dissent but before Catholic
emancipation) they were perfectly free to go to the Protestant
Christian church of their choice (except for Baptists and Methodists
and such).

-- that these were examples of perfect freedom, because going outside
those bounds was not actual freedom but abuse.

I might then forbid anyone to venerate and revere the queen, and tell
Tivar that he's free to revere the king or not revere the king as he
prefers.

I strongly disagree with this type of argument.

For years, I was scared and in the closest.  You will, I hope, forgive
me for my strong reaction to the notion that institutionalizing it was
and is "fun".
