William, instead of privately e-mailing all those involved in a
conversation asking them to stop it, might it be better advised for
them to e-mail yourself? It would give you a good sense of when a
topic has become offensive to a large proportion of the e-mail list
and save people from having personal confrontations (not to mention
having to privately e-mail multiple persons participating in a
thread). Just a thought and feel free to disregard it.

Incidentally, while I may disagree with some of the opinions expressed
in the thread some think has gone on too long, the only thing that has
offended me is the people who have asked multiple times for the
conversation to end because of their personal boredom with the topic.
It strikes me as especially ironic that they complain some of those
participating in the discussion are just repeating themselves when
they are themselves committing the same offense. To them I would say
"Really, we heard your request to end the discussion the first time,
repeating the request doesn't make us more likely to comply."
