Greetings, I am Lady Lyneya de Grey, and I am in charge of pre-registering entrants for Steppes Artisan, which will be held on July 28, in Carrollton, TX. We already have a good number of entrants, and many are first time entrants. I thought that I would let people who might be interested, know why Steppes Artisan is different from many other A & S competitions in the Kingdom. This will be the 25th time that a Steppes Artisan will be chosen, that makes it one of the oldest A & S competitions in Ansteorra. We are pleased to welcome all who would join our Barony in celebrating this Argent Anniversary!Steppes Artisan is a unique competition in that once your display is set up...you will play host to the various judges (Previous winners and permanent holders of the Steppes Artisan title, as well as the Baron and Baroness of the Steppes.) You will be answering their questions as they look at your work and your documentation. Expect to spend 5 to 15 minutes with each. It is possible, that you may have one or two spend more or less time than that, but I believe that is about average. If you are not able to sit with your display, you should have someone who knows it well and can answer questions, take your place. A break of a few minutes to answer nature's call, shouldn't be a problem, but try to be available as much as possible. It is to your advantage to be there any time a judge comes by.Anyone who attends the event is invited to ask questions and look at the displays, as well, but if a judge comes while you are looking, please yield to the judge, if at all possible. With a couple of dozen entries to judge, they need to have access priority. There will probably be a lunch break (there usually is) so that everyone can get up and stretch their legs, get some fresh air, etc.At the end of the judging period, the judges will retire to deliberate and the artisans will take down their displays. When the results are about to be announced in court, each of the past winners who are present will select their personal favorites and present them with a token or gift. After all of the favorites are announced, the new Steppes Artisan will be announced. If YOU are selected, there are a few expectations. Their Excellencies will advise you of their expectations, but usually you will be asked to be present at Steppes events, if possible. These are: Steppes Twelfth Night, Steppes Warlord, and of course, next year's Steppes Artisan. You may be asked to come up with some kind of display or activity for those events. You will also be eligible to judge the rest of the Steppes Artisan competitions. So, please plan on spending a lot of time at your display. You may want to bring something you are working on to keep you busy when you are not actively answering questions.
If you would like to pre-register, please send me your SCA name, Legal name, SCA group name, email address, a phone number and whether that number is a cell or home phone, and a brief description of your display and whether or not you need electricity. Please be advised that ALL entrants will be permitted only one table and one dress form. Please do not ask for room for additional tables, or room. everything MUST fit into an area the size of the single table and dress form.
If you have further questions, you may contact me at sueorintx at hotmail.com or (972) 429-8985. Please no calls after 9 PM.We are please to have you participate! Good luck!
In service,
Lyneya de Grey
