There were period wax tablets that were two pieces of wood, each
hollowed out and filled with wax for scribing on.
It would seem like you could very easily carve these out of your
choice of wood to conceal your iPhone or other touch smartphone. You
could easily lace them together on one edge with a leather cord for a
hinge.
But then, I've been planning on making a wax tablet for use in the SCA
for almost 20 years, and still haven't done it.
