This is not an Internet scam. Honest. I am not a Nigerian playing on your sympathies and hoping that you will believe your friend John is truly as stupid as this tale suggests. I really am your friend, and I really am too stupid to use traveller's cheques. Please find it in your heart to loan me $1750 USD (unless this amount sounds insultingly small, in which case I will grudgingly accept five or even ten thousand USD), which I will promptly repay as soon as I convince some less deserving sap to give me his money. Please. If you do not loan me the money, the hotel won't give me back my passport, my luggage, or my wife and/or girlfriend (or male partner if I happen to be gay and have forgotten in this moment of stress). I will happily name my first-born son after you, even if you are female. Unless John Y--I mean unless I already have a first-born son, in which case I will name my first-born grandson after you. I would go to the US embassy and ask them for help, but they don't give out loans--especially not to Nigerian nationals, which I of course definitely am not.
