The first book I read like this was 

Ariel: Book of Change, by Steven R. Boyett.
I found it enjoyable and being a gamer our group played around with the theme as 
an RPG a few times.

 There are few problems that can not be solved with the proper application of 
violence.

This is an interesting "what if".  It immediately reminded me of S. M.
Stirling's "Dies The Fire" Trilogy.  It's another "what if" tale with the
whole world plunged into a bewildering event that causes electronics.
engines, gunpowder, phones and other modern day conviences to fail.  People
must learn to cope using the old ways.  The SCA group is used in the
book...not going to say more 'cause it would spoil the tale!
