Many years ago there were a recurring event called the 'Quest for the Clover', down in the southern region. 
I don't recall if Stargate or Raven's Fort hosted the event, but as Sir John the Plain resided in the southern region, I'm suspecting he may have participated in coordinating that quest from time to time.   
 
A really good Quest, based on a historical theme, is an 'artform', I would suggest, somewhat akin to writing a good play and then producing it.   Hence, the reason for the Sable Thistle in Questing, I would suspect.
