Rimshots didn't really come into their own until they started putting 
metal rims on drums. Prior to that a good solid rimshot sounded 
something like "bum-clonk-crak," followed by a round of cursing whilst 
the rim was replaced.

Prior to that, rims were actually below the level of the head, and being 
the recipient of a rimshot means the archer just barely missed.
