Greetings,
I am Haraldr Bassi and for the past several years I've been bringing some of my tools and
offering long duration classes at Steppes Warlord.
This year, I will be bringing woodworking tools and having wood available for people to make
their own wooden Viking style six board boxes. I will have my workshop setup indoors in the hall
where we can work in relative comfort.
<class info>
Class title: Make a Viking six board chest
Instructor: HL Haraldr Bassi
Description: In the Viking age, trapezoidal six board chests were ubiquitous. Students will be
creating their own six board chest using only the tools we know the Vikings had available: saws,
chisels, square and spoon bits. No prior woodworking experience is required. Project complexity
can be lowered using half lap joints or increased using wide dovetail joints. All materials and
tools will be provided. Finished boxes are sized to fit into the rear of most hatch back
vehicles and coincidentally are within 3cm of the original box from the Oseberg ship burial.
Class Limit: I will have 3-4 boxes worth of wood available. Observers are welcome to watch and
learn the techniques.
Duration: Starting circa 10am Saturday morning and going until done or the hall closes. Estimate
6-11 hours to complete a box depending on complexity and experience. I will be available on
Sunday circa 9:30-1:30pm for anyone who was unable to complete their box on Saturday. Students
who need to leave for other time commitments, within reason, will be accommodated. We will also
have breaks for food, courts etc.
Materials fees: A box made with knotty Pine is $25. I might have one box worth of cedar left
which has a materials cost of $40. Cedar is much lighter than pine, has many less knots, has an
appropriate medieval rough side for inside and under the boxes and naturally repels insects and
moths. However, it is a loose grained wood and will not make as neat of a joint as pine.
Students are advised to contact me at "boxclass at haraldr dot drakkar dot org" if they wish to
make a cedar box. I can purchase more cedar if demand is there, but would prefer to use up some
of the pine I have left over from Gulf Wars.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you wish to reserve a box made of aromatic
cedar.
Thanks,
Haraldr Bassi, Bjornsborg
