I think all of us were in the SCA a while before we started on making people believe in our persona. I had been in four 5 years. Oh, I had a base line and slightly better I had a name and I knew I came form Scotland, but I had not started to project my persona.
First thing we need to ask ourselves is are we happy with us knowing our persona or do we wish our personas to recognized by others? My Husband has a very deep persona. It is very complex , but he is so quiet no one knows what it is. He wanted to be a Norman Duke. He is a very good Norman Duke, but most people really can't learn anything about Norman Dukes unless they go up and talk to him. I play the part of being a European Duchess. This is not hard because I am really a Western hills of Scotland girl who is putting on the airs of a Duchess. Therefore it is my persona playing a persona which makes showing it off easier. Have I lost everyone?
Personas outside of the main European Culture seem easier to portray because they stand out against the Ansteorra culture. We seem to recognize Norseman and middle Eastern people and others (Japanese, Chinese, maybe Scots, etc.) Portraying a French Knight can be confused with being an Ansteorran Knight. Portraying an English Lady is much like being an Ansteorran Lady. 
Many people have wonderful complex persona which only come out if you take the time to listen to them. They are in persona most of the time, but since they are behaving properly in the Ideal Ansteorran culture we don't notice. Some of us try to stand out. We are making a show of it. There is no right and wrong. There is what you feel comfortable doing.
