Dear people I have met very few people that could maintain a period persona all the time. Duke Cariadoc did it a lot. I found his refusal to deal with things out of his time period hard to deal with. Many people who do have intense personas do have to realize that others react to their persona as there persona would. I have a Gypsy Persona, The Grand Duchess Zaferia of the Maresh tribe. Many people do not like my Gypsy. Many personas would not like Gypsies. I understand this and I understand. If a gentleman will not help Zaferia I understand. I even understand if the bad feelings the Gypsy gathers bleeds into my working SCA persona. I don't like it but I understand. If you are a slave or peasant you will not be treated with the same courtesies that a person of good birth would be treated with. I won't sit with you if you are a peasant. If you are a Moor there might be Hostipaliers who would not deal with you in persona. Many people in the SCA are not up to interacting on that level. The best thing is to find someone and plan the interaction. We had a Crusader who arranged a confrontation with a Moor. We put lots of unbreakable things on a table and when the Moor sat down the Crusader swept all the plates and goblets off the table," Saying he would not dishonor the holy dead by sitting with a heathen." We were supposed to be in Slicily so the person play King Roger calmed everything down and explained all Christan, Muslin and Jew were welcomed at his table and if anyone was unable to handle that they could leave. This was carefully arranged and worked out. Interplay between personas can be very interesting, but they do take some planning. The physical area need to be prepared. When the Ardoon and the Caldal had their fight that started the First Clan Games we had gotten OK's from the Autocrat and created a fighting area so no one would be hurt. Mock fights have more rules on them now so to do one you would have to get OKs from officers. I am not sure. Be sure to check because the rules for that change all the time. In general--no live steel. Vegtomas thinks to the day I put a real dagger to his back during the persona play setting up the fight between Namron and Bjornsberg. I hate to tell him it was a rubber dagger. But he believed it was real and everyone else did also. A judicial duel would be interesting. I have been wanting a duel over devices, like the one mentioned in the Heraldry book, for years. I think it would be interesting to see what people in early medieval times when their devices clashed. In a way these fights or conflicts are like the things on the Wrestling shows. They look real, but you know that they are not real. A major rule in the SCA. If you the person is really mad we do not fight.
