Yes we know. But it's so reassuring to know that you
recognize it, too. Makes it much easier to bear with.

Ever see the pilot episode of the old Showtime Robin
Hood series, starring Michael Praed? The episode was
called "Robin Hood & the Sorcerer", and it featured a
sequence of the classic archery tournament story. It's
available on video (I have a copy). That format looks
very like a royal round to me.

I'm going for "Patron of Archery", myself. Y'all let
me know when I get there.

Start with me. What's archery etiquette?

Now, Plachoya may not like this, but I am paying
attention here largely to get ideas for the archery
tourney at Elfsea Defender in Sept. At that event
(which will be very like a full-employment act for
heralds), each archer will be heralded, hopefully by
the herald he has himself hired for the purpose (think
of it; you won't have to do your own bragging, someone
will do it for you) (I know Fearghus has already hired
a herald for this). There will be additional prizes
for pageantry, appearance, showmanship on the range.
I'm hoping to get children to help glean arrows, to
speed up the least entertaining part of the activity.
Her Excellency and I will have our thrones set up
behind the firing line to watch the entire shoot. I'm
hoping to have as marshals, scorekeepers, timers, etc.,
people who are not also shooting (the way fighters
don't usually marshal or listmistress their own
tournies). I'm hoping the range will be decorated with
banners and pennants. For archers, flowing sleeves are
not a requirement, but you might want to think about
heraldic surcoats, or particularly authentic-looking
tunics, at least. Not court garb, but nice-looking
field garb, like I wear when I fight. We hope to have
nice prizes, too. The Bard of Elfsea this year is
being flown to Trimaris to visit the Coronation of
their next war-king (if we can get the details worked
out). We'll have more airline tickets for use in 2001,
and it's possible that those will go to our archery
Defender of Elfsea (I don't get to make that decision
alone). It will be scheduled first thing Saturday
morning, and shot as a Royal Round, and the chivalric
and rapier lists won't begin until it's done. I am
hoping that this will generate excitement and interest
in archery among people who haven't done much shooting
before, and that it will be a refreshing change for
folks who've been working the ranges in the heat off on
the fringes of the events for years.

(And afterwards, if there's interest, why not leave the
range open for an IKAC shoot?)

That's my vision. The people who've always run the
shoots can't do this. My barony can. Does it sound
worth trying?
