ABD - is an Anti-Bounce Back which was to slow down the arrow or bolt
from bouncing all over the place.

APD  - is a Anti-Penetration Device which is to keep the arrow or bolt
from penetrating the grill of a helm.

The APD came about at Gulf Wars X, in which a crossbow bolt got spin
around so that the nock-end was traveling forward toward the fighters on
the opposite side. It entered the grill of helm of one fighter (forget
who) and almost into the eye.
