Susan Hill (sueorintx at hotmail.com) said something that sounded like:
> Actually, Master Pug, as I had posted earlier,

I must have missed some of this somehow.

Yes, but were were discussing the "real world" meanings of the words at
the time. There are many words that have changed dramatically and give
the "masses" different images than we are aiming for.

In the SCA *award* structure, there is no transition from Apprentice to
  Peer.

In the SCA Chirurgeonate, there are many stages that the person does go
through. They make sure to clearly state "Apprentice Chirurgeon", "Master
Chirurgeon" in order to not be stomped on by those who take easy offense
at the presumption of being a Master.

In this Kingdom, the terms used for students in "binding" relationships
  are:

Knight - Squire
Laurel - Apprentice
Pelican - Protege
Don/Dona - Cadet

Man at arms is used for a lot of things including:

- Someone who has not made it to squire/cadet status
  - There are those who do this as a test period for both to figure out
if they want to take the relationship further or not
- Someone who is not a Knight/Don/Dona that is trying to form a binding
  relationship with someone
  - Some of these may go on to be squire/cadet if the "master" is elevated

Student is used by anyone who is teaching another and doesn't have a
binding relationship. In Kingdoms where Master of Arms are more prevelent,
it is sometimes used instead of squire.

Ciao,
