Well i would guess that the only way to make things fair is to hold crossbows in there own championship. Make the prizes, hold the shoot with the bows and put only crossbows with crossbows. Gain momentum and build on it. Once there is enough interest and crossbows standing there ask the nobles for thier time and make the request to have a crossbow champion. The crossbow community provides the regalia, prizes etc.....

Only other option i can see is starting the Order of St Christopher and holding out own champion shoot, shoot with the bow shooters using the smae format as to not tie the marshals time up. Then hold our own awards cerimony. Pick up momentium and swhen there is enough crossbows standing there - ask the nobles to have our own champion....

Sounds like the progression that archery in this area took from 1998 to 2202.

Hell, worset case - the archers are happy that the crossbows aren't in direct competition, the crossbows are happy as there would be crossbow prizes and usable items for a crossbow only shooter and peace might actually ensue between to VERY period and rightful disiplines.

However shutting crossbows out right out of any future competition is wrong. Granted there is about 3 of us, but thats 30 to 45 bucks the event will lose out on.

Wheels are turning, problem is getting shooters. prizes and gear is not an issue - i have 9 crossbows sitting here now.

Ok, so that would be equivalent to us in the SCA saying

"Upon the judgment of the archer in charge allowance may be made for various disabilities. For example, visually impaired archers may have someone tell them where their arrows strike the target. Archers in wheelchairs may shoot while seated. Archers unable to cock their crossbows may have someone cock it for them, etc."

Which is exactly what the IKAC rules say and the process that I have alway seen applied across SCA target archery. If you are not physically able to stand then you are welcome to shoot your crossbows while seated in any tournaments where crossbows are allowed..
