Friends and fellow archers
Some background into Bowyerthon. Several years ago, when I first took up
the sport of archery, like many newcomers I was overwhelmed by the cost of
proper equipment. I shot modern fiberglass bows because professionally made wooden
longbows were fantastically expensive. Still, when I dressed myself in period
garb, and stepped up to the shooting line with my "plastic" bow, it just
didn't feel right. How could I enjoy a full appreciation of medieval archery
shooting a mass produced 21st century bow?
Thus my quest began, and after 3 years of research, study, hard work, and
trial and error, I've reached a point where I can create excellent shooting
period longbows economically, and with a minimum of tools and equipment. First
goal met. Second goal; to teach others (Bowyerthon) how they can make their own
period longbows and experience the true spirit of medieval archery. Final
objective; to promote and perpetuate the bowyer's craft to such an extent that
making and shooting period archery equipment will be no less commonplace than
making and wearing period garb. With enough bowyers sprinkled about the kingdom,
putting affordable longbows in the hands of our archers, our archery can once
more have the look, and the feel, of the period of history we portray.
Lofty goal? Perhaps, but big things can come from small beginnings. Come
join us at Bowyerthon, and see for yourself ;-)

Cheers,
Robert of Yorkshire
