We've had a nice lady showing up to Middleford's archery practice with her
two young daughters in tow. Bright girls, showing a good deal of aptitude and
enthusiasm, age 6 and 7, but shoot like they're much older. Well, the mom asked
our advice on purchasing bows for the girls, and after checking a few of the
usual suppliers, we determined that 20 lb. draw kid's bows are now going for
around thirty bucks a pop. I about blew a gasket, that's simply ludicrous, SIXTY
bucks to equip two little girls. I told the mom to just hold off, that I'd do
some "checking around".

What I did was hop in my truck and off to Lowe's to pick up some red oak
"bowstaves" (2"w x 1/2"thick x48"L, unit cost of $3.48). Thus equipped, Randall
of Middleford and I got together three evenings after work, and with a goodly
bit of carving, cussing, and consuming the output of our local brewers, we
wound up with three sweet little bows. They draw 15, 20, and 25 lbs. respectively,
and the total cost for all three came in a few pennies over fifteen bucks!
Wait a minute, that's three bows!?! Yup, we figured we'd surprise the mom with
a bow of her own so she could get in on the fun too!

To see the look on those ladies' faces, and to get to see them shooting the
bows we made, was well worth sacrificing a wee bit of our time and effort. The
girls are tickled with their bows, Randall's tickled because he got to learn
how to make a bow, and actually did a very good job, and me, I guess I picked
up a little positive Karma, nothing wrong with that.

Just one thing, henceforth, if anybody calls me or Randall a "Good Bow Fairy"
(are you listening Gilli?) it's "smile when ya say that pilgrim" ;-)

Cheers all,
Robert of Yorkshire
