Archery Competitions for Bryn Gwlad Baronial Event, 10/22/2005 -
Austin, Texas

There will be two separate archery venues - A general archery prize
tourney, and a combat crossbow competition to select the next Baronial
Archery Champion.

==========================================
General Target Archery - Prize Tourney : 10 AM to 2 PM
Range will be located between the Theatre and the boat dock.

This competition will be open for all forms of SCA-accepted target
archery. Longbows, recurves, self-bows and crossbows will all be
allowed. There will be one competition for adults, and a competition
for children. If there are enough children in various age groups we
will have age brackets for the kids competition. Prizes will be
awarded.

Adult Competition:
The adults will shoot six arrows (or bolts) per target at 20 yards
range, using their choice of bow types, with the targets being a deer,
a boar, and a standard bulls-eye target. The top three adult scorers
will then compete in a double-elimination 'String shoot'.

Children's Competition (17 and under):
Children will shoot two rounds of six arrows each at a bulls-eye
target, at a range of 10 yards. The children will compete using their
choice of bow types.

Scoring:
The bull's-eye, for adults or for children, is scored in the standard
manner - 5 points for a bull's-eye, decreasing by one for each ring
outward, for a six shot max of 30 points.

The animal targets are life-sized paper targets, and score 10 points
for the 'Heart' area, 8 points for the next area out, which marks where
the lungs are, and 5 points for anywhere else that touches the animal
(even legs or horns), for a six shot max of 60 points.

Thus, for the adults, the first round score could be as high as 150
points.

In the final round for the adults, the top three scorers will be
selected, for a double-elimination 'string shoot'. They will shoot six
arrows each at any target. A string will be stretched around each
archer's grouping, and the longest string loses that round. Two losses
in this phase eliminates an archer.

Prizes :
The adult winner will receive one dozen hand-crafted arrows or crossbow
bolts, to be fletched in the winner's choice of colors. These will be
made by HLS Jason of Rosaria.

For the children, there will be period prizes for first, second and
third place, plus all three also will get a gift certificate for ice
cream at Maggie Moos. If we split the children's competition into
multiple age brackets, there will be one prize per age bracket.

==================================
Combat Target Archery - Baronial Archery Championship: 3 PM to 5 PM
Range will be located between the Castle and the Ship.

This competition will be to select the next Baronial Archery Champion.
Participants will be restricted to combat-legal crossbows and bolts,
and must at a minimum wear a fencing mask or other combat archery
approved head/face protection. Loaner gear will be available.

Several firing stations will be set up. The archer must stand (or kneel
if so designated) in a marked square on the ground, and must aim at a
designated IKCAC target that will be positioned in or near the castle.
They will get three shots from each position, scoring 10 points for the
face plate, 8 for the center chest circle, and 5 for any other hit.

One station will have two targets, representing a noble protected by a
shield man. Clean hits on the noble are scored double.

Each archer will shoot from each station, and their scores will be
tallied. The top three will have a double-elimination shoot-off, aiming
at the 'Noble and shield man' station.

Prizes :
The winner will be named the next Baronial Archery Champion, and will
also receive one dozen crossbow bolts.
